La COP25 (conferencia para el cambio climático en Madrid ) reunió a delegados de todo el mundo para enfrentar la emergencia climática global.

El cambio climático

De hecho, los científicos advirtieron durante décadas sobre el cambio climático causado por el calentamiento global y las emisiones de gases de efecto invernadero. El calentamiento global aumentó 1.5 ° C en comparación con la era preindustrial. Esto podría continuar alcanzando 3-5 ° C para fines de este siglo si no se toman medidas pronto según los expertos de la IPCC. El aumento en la temperatura promedio de la superficie de la tierra ya está causando condiciones climáticas extremas. Estos cambios están aumentando el nivel del mar, disminuyendo el hielo marino del Ártico y, en consecuencia, afectando la vida en la tierra.

El mercado de carbono en la COP25

Un punto clave en las negociaciones fue la implementación del Artículo 6 del Acuerdo de París sobre un mecanismo de mercado global para el comercio de carbono. Sin embargo, el mercado de carbono no fue respaldado por los países más contaminantes. Estos paises son responsables de más del 50% de los contaminantes de dióxido de carbonato como Estados Unidos, China, India, Brasil y Rusia.

Por otro lado, organizaciones ambientales como Amigos de la Tierra no veían los mercados de carbono como una acción real sobre el cambio climático. Además, ellos consideran que violan los derechos humanos, particularmente afectando a los pueblos y comunidades indígenas en el sur global. Exigieron apoyo urgente para los países pobres que ya están sufriendo pérdidas y daños debido al colapso climático causado por las grandes empresas.

La COP25 no logra acuerdos satisfactorios

Después de más de dos semanas de negociaciones, la conferencia terminó solo con un acuerdo limitado. El eslogan de la conferencia Tiempo para la acción no reflejó la falta de compromisos de muchas partes para abordar el cambio climático. Muchos quedaron decepcionados por el resultado de esta conferencia, incluido el Secretario General de la ONU, Antonio Guterres. Según Greenpeace, los acuerdos de la COP25 se vieron afectados una vez más por los intereses corporativos. Ellos consideran que las empresas ven las acciones contra el cambio climático como una amenaza para sus márgenes de beneficio. Por otro lado, el movimiento juvenil Fridays For Future  y la activista adolescente Greta Thunberg vieron los resultados de la COP25 como insuficientes. En un comunicado ellos dijeron: Ya no aceptaremos palabras vacías y necesitamos líderes que escuchen a la gente.

Futura perspectivas

La presidenta de la COP25, Carolina Schmidt, anunció que:

• 73 naciones manifestaron su intención de presentar un plan de acción climática mejorado.
• 11 países ya iniciaron un proceso interno en el plan nacional para 2020.
• 73 partes en la Convención Marco de las Naciones Unidas sobre el Cambio Climático, 14 regiones, 398 ciudades y 768 empresas.
• 16 inversores están trabajando para lograr emisiones netas de CO2 cero para 2050.

Si estas intenciones se convierten en acciones reales, es algo que se verá en futuras COPs. Lamentablemente estamos lejos de limitar el calentamiento global a 1.5 ° C sin la participación de los países más contaminantes como China y Estado Unidos. Sin medidas efectivas no será posible reducir las emisiones de CO2 en un 45% para el 2030 y llegar a emissiones cero para el 2050.

The COP25 (UN conference for Climate change in Madrid) brought together delegates from all over the world to face the global climate emergency.

The climate change

In fact, scientists and environmental organizations warned for decades about the climate change caused by global warming and greenhouse gas emissions. Studies showed that the global warming increased 1.5°C compared to the preindustrial era. This could reach 3-5°C by the end of this century if no action is taken soon according the experts from IPCC. The increase in the average temperature of the earth’s surface is already causing extreme weather, rising sea levels, diminishing Arctic sea ice and consequently affecting life on earth.

The carbon market in COP25

One key point in the negotiations was the implementation of the Article 6 of the Paris Agreement regarding a global market mechanism for trading carbon. However, the controversial carbon market concept was not supported by countries which together are responsable for more than 50% of carbonate dioxide contaminants like USA, China, India, Brazil and Russia.

On the other hand, activists and environmental organizations like “Friends of the Earth” didn´t see the carbon markets as a real action on climate change, violating human rights, particularly affecting indigenous peoples and communities in the global south. They demanded urgent support for poor countries that are already suffering losses and damages due to climate collapse caused by big companies and rich countries.

COP25 does not reach satisfactory agreements

After more than two weeks of negotiations, the conference ended only in a limited agreement and the slogan of the conference “Time for action” did not reflect the lack of commitments by many parties to address climate change. Many were disappointed by the result of this conference including the UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres. According to Greenpeace, the agreements were affected once again by corporate interests that see actions against climate change as a threat to their profit margins. The youth movement “Fridays For Future” and the teenage activist Greta Thunberg saw the outcomes of COP25 as insufficient saying “We will no longer accept empty words and We need leaders that listen to the people”.

Future perspectives

The COP25 president Carolina Schmidt announced that:

• 73 nations signaled their intention to submit an enhanced climate action plan.
• 11 countries already initiated an internal process in the national plan by 2020.
• 73 parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change.
• 14 regions, 398 cities, 768 businesses and 16 investors are working to achieve net-zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

If these intentions become real actions, it is something that will be seen in future COPs. In fact, we are far from limiting global warming to 1.5°C without the involvement of the most polluting countries like China and USA, it will not be possible to reduce carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by approximately 45 percent by 2030 and then reach ‘net zero’ around 2050.
